Alternatively, for those of you looking for something a bit more unique, opt for a rental of unusual accommodation in Provence—the kind you won’t find at most star-rated campsites in France. When booking a chalet, please let us know if you have any pets.

You also have the option of renting a pitch for a RV or Tent in the Verdon Valley. These are unique pitches surrounded by nature, thanks to the campground’s riverside location. You won’t find a better pitch anywhere—not among the campgrounds in the Alps, Provence, or the Luberon.

Discover the largest city in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region

Located about 10 kilometers from the campground in the Luberon region, Manosque is a historic town in Provence built on a foothill of the Luberon hills. It is the most populous city in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, with more than 20,000 residents.

Most interesting for its history, you’ll mainly visit its medieval old town and its central square. Surrounded by boulevards that have replaced the old city walls—of which only the Saunerie and Soubeyran gates (dating from the Middle Ages) remain today—the old town in the center stands in stark contrast to the rest of the modern city, which offers little of cultural or tourist interest.

With its tall houses featuring terraces lining the narrow streets, you’ll findthe typical atmosphere of Provençal villages here, not to mention its market, filled with the scents of the South, every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Take this opportunity to enjoy a panoramic view of the Durance Valley by climbing to the top of Mont d’Or Hill, where the ruins of a very ancient keep stand—a true symbol of the city and the only remaining part of the castle built in the year 974 by William, known as “the Liberator.”

A cultural hub par excellence, be sure to explore the heritage of Manosque, the hometown of Jean Giono, where the writer lived from 1930 until his death in 1970. In fact, you can take a free tour (by appointment) of his house in the “Lou Paraïs” neighborhood— a listed historic monument—where he created most of his work.

To relax, and just a stone’s throw from downtown, enjoy Lac des Vannades, an artificial freshwater lake located within a 15-hectare recreational area. There, you’ll find free, supervised swimming from early June through late August, as well as a variety of activities (sailing, pedal boats, mini-golf, a sailing school, rowing for adults, a fitness trail, playground equipment for children, and more).
