The Verdon Gorge, an exceptional natural site
The Verdon Gorges are an exceptional natural park in France, located in the heart of Provence, between the Var and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence departments. These narrow gorges can reach depths of up to 700 meters and vary in width from 6 to 100 meters along the Verdon River. The highlight is, of course, Lake Sainte-Croix, an artificial lake created in 1973 following the construction of the Sainte-Croix Dam.
This area in the heart of the Verdon and Var gorges is home to many lakes; Lake Sainte-Croix is a must-see, but you can also explore Lake Castillon, not far from the town of Castellane. These lakes will be the perfect family destination for your vacation; children can safely enjoy playing in the azure waters they offer.
You’ll also discover remarkable sites such as “Le Styx” in the Verdon (named after the river Styx from Greek mythology), which is a sort of mini-canyon within the canyon, or “L’Imbut,” a narrow passage where the Verdon vanishes underground beneath a massive pile of boulders.
Moustiers-Sainte-Marie and Esparron-de-Verdon
During your visit, be sure to stop in Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, named one of the most beautiful villages in France and located next to Lake Sainte-Croix. Nestled against a rocky cliff, this village is often compared to a nativity scene, with its star suspended in mid-air—hanging from a chain since the 13th century and stretched between two rocky outcrops.
Having fallen at least 11 times over the centuries, the star was always replaced by the town’s residents. Moustier-Sainte-Marie is also known for its famous earthenware, showcased in many of the village’s shops—a great opportunity to bring home a traditional—and pricey—souvenir or to visit its earthenware museum, founded in 1930.
Just 40 km from the campground, and still in the heart of the Gorges, you can also explore Esparron-de-Verdon and its lake of the same name, which is crossed by the GR4 hiking trail and served as the setting for the 2015 TV series “Les Mystères du Lac.” Stroll through the village’s narrow streets, admire its 13th-century castle and its picturesque old houses. Rent an electric boat and explore the Gorges d’Esparron, which are just as magnificent and, above all, less crowded (reservations are strongly recommended during peak season).
The following activities are presented by our local partner, Verdon Voyages. You can also contact them at 04 92 71 01 33.
