Visit the town of Valensole
The town of Valensole is famous for two things: its plateau of the same name and its lavender fields. Located in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region, it spans nearly 800 kilometers, making it one of the largest towns in France.
The same goes for its plateau, which covers more than 12,700 hectares. Valensole is known as an ideal place for growing lavandin. Learn more about what makes this town so famous. Also, don’t miss the lavender festival in July during your stay at our campground near Valensole!
The Valensole Plateau
The Valensole Plateau is known as the region’s breadbasket. It is used for growing grains and lavender. Its appearance tends to change with the seasons. You can visit this iconic site year-round. But the best time to visit is undoubtedly in July. There, you’ll discover one of Provence’s most breathtaking landscapes. The beautiful blues of the lavender and the golden hues of the wheat will dazzle you. Alternatively, March is also a good time to visit. The plateau takes on a pink hue thanks to the almond trees in bloom.
The lavender fields in Valensole
The Valensole Plateau is the quintessential place to find lavender and lavandin in Provence. Be careful, however, not to confuse these two plants. They differ in color and scent. True lavender, or fine lavender, has a blue-violet hue, while lavandin tends to have a more uniform color. Also, the scent of lavandin tends to be stronger than that of true lavender. In any case, you’ll have no trouble finding the famous lavender fields. You can find them along the D6, D8, and D15 roads, among others.
During your trip, don’t forget to bring your camera. That way, you can spend the day taking pictures of every row of these beautiful flowers. You’ll also see other crops on the plateau, including fields of sunflowers, sage, and wheat.
The Market in Valensole
The Valensole market is another reason this town is famous. It takes place every Wednesday and Saturday on Avenue Segond. It brings together a multitude of vendors selling all kinds of products. You can find seafood, meat, fruits, vegetables, and deli items there. But you can also visit the market to buy non-food items, such as furniture, clothing, kitchenware, and even toys. It’s a great way to spend some time during your stay at our 3-star campground in the Luberon!
