Near the La Rivière campground, in the heart of the Luberon Regional Nature Park, Forcalquier is a typical Provençal hilltop village located about 8 km from the campground. With just under 5,000 residents and as the sixth-largest town in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, the village is renowned for having “the purest sky and air in France, if not all of Europe.”
You’ll be dazzled by the magnificent panoramic view from the citadel at its summit. Built on the pitch where the castle of the Counts of Forcalquier once stood, you can explore the beautiful little chapel of Notre-Dame de Provence, dating from the late 19th century, as well as one of the very few open-air carillons with 18 bells in Provence.
Every Sunday and on major holidays, it allows people to hear its melody played using the traditional fist-striking technique.
You can also visit its cemetery, which is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe, and its Notre-Dame du Bourget Cathedral.
