The History of the Forcalquier Citadel<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Are you planning a vacation in the Luberon at a campground near Forcalquier<\/a>? Be sure to include Forcalquier in your itinerary. This town is known for its archaeological and historical heritage, which reflects its eventful past. The History of the Citadel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Historians have stated that the oppidum where the Forcalquier citadel<\/strong> once stood was inhabited during the Neolithic period<\/strong>. In ancient times, the Celts and the Ligurians <\/strong>were also present there <\/strong>. To protect themselves from barbarian invasions, the local people took refuge on the heights of the oppidum. It was not until the Middle Ages that<\/strong> a castle was built on this site. It served as the residence of the counts of Forcalquier and Provence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This building would suffer damage from the bombardments that marked the siege of 1481<\/strong>, a time when the city was forcibly incorporated into the Kingdom of France. Unfortunately, this historic structure would be destroyed during the Wars of Religion. In 1601<\/strong>, Henry IV ordered that the remains of the castle be completely demolished. Over the centuries, the city\u2019s hills and the area surrounding the castle fell into disrepair<\/strong>. Today, on the site where the residence of the Counts of Forcalquier once stood, there is one of the last manual carillons in Provence and the Notre-Dame de Provence Chapel. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The Chapel of Our Lady of Provence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Notre-Dame-de-Provence <\/strong> Chapel<\/strong> is <\/strong>one of the most famous historic monuments in the Luberon. Perched atop a hill<\/strong>, where the castle of the Counts of Forcalquier once stood, this site offers a breathtaking 360\u00b0<\/strong> view of Haute-Provence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its construction spanned the years 1868 to 1875. It is built in the Neo-Byzantine style. You\u2019ll be captivated by the angel musicians adorning the corners and the dome. At <\/strong>its apex is a depiction of the Blessed Virgin Mary <\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Proven\u00e7al saints are carved on the tympanum of the entrance arch. Inside, you\u2019ll feel as though this chapel is whispering an enchanting melody<\/strong>. In fact, the carillon can be rung by hand<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, during the celebrations, a musician is on hand to perform a piece using the bells that make up the carillon. Although there used to be about 20 of them, only 15 remain<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Walk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The road leading to the Notre Dame de Provence Chapel is a journey full of discoveries. Along the way, you\u2019ll come across the Visitandines Convent.<\/strong> Although this building dates back to 1634, it was rebuilt to house the town hall. You\u2019ll also pass by the Notre-Dame-du-Bourguet Cathedral<\/strong>, considered one of Forcalquier\u2019s<\/a> most important landmarks. Your walk will take you to the Saint-Jean Church, which is listed as a Historic Monument<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the instability of the ground, this hidden church has unfortunately suffered multiple instances of subsidence and is still awaiting restoration. During your stroll, be sure to walk past the synagogue<\/strong>. Although there is no historical evidence to confirm that this building was a place of worship, it stands as a testament to the fact that the city once had a Jewish community<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n
